Outreach and Education

The Wallace Global Fund supports selected projects that lie outside traditional program guidelines but which the Fund believes support and advance overall progress toward sustainable development. The Fund welcomes innovative, inter-disciplinary, and cross-cutting proposals of global significance which work to engage diverse constituencies, increase public awareness, encourage international cooperation and collaboration, and/or strengthen capacity within institutions.

Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) - $100,000

Core operating support to CIEL as it transitions to a new phase in its organizational evolution, characterized by strategic planning, diversification of funding sources, and institutional strengthening. CIEL is a public interest environmental law organization founded in 1989 to protect the global environment and promote sustainable development by strengthening international laws and institutions. CIEL's six program areas include Biodiversity and Wildlife, Climate Change, Human Rights and the Environment, Trade and Environment, International Financial Institutions, and Capacity Building.

Internews - $75,000 over two months

For the development of a business and operational plan, as well as the production of a pilot, for Humanitas TV, a 24-hour-a-day humanitarian and environmental activism television channel. Internews will start with the direct broadcast satellite industry, expected to reach 15 million homes in 1999, with plans to migrate to other broadcast, cable, or digital platforms.

Worldwatch Institute - $100,000

Core support for Worldwatch in its research to establish the links between the global economy and the various trends that are undermining the world’s future, such as deforestation, climate change, and population growth. Through its numerous publications and press releases (including three books, two annuals, five papers, a monthly magazine, and a series of electronic press briefs in 1999), Worldwatch mobilizes a vast array of media and publishing resources on behalf of the myriad issues critical to sustainable development.

Aspen Institute - $80,000

Support for the Congressional program of the Aspen Institute, an educational initiative designed to promote leadership in the US Congress, by providing lawmakers with a deeper understanding and background on critical issues, primarily in the area of foreign policy. Grant funds will be put toward the Congressional Program's Project on the Global Environment.

Globe-US - $60,000

Support for Congressional Institute for the Future/Globe-US, the voluntary non-partisan association of US Senators and Members of the US House of Representatives, for its work as advocate and facilitator on key international environmental issues, such as international institutional reform, global climate change, and biodiversity conservation. As a member of the Globe-international network, the US chapter will work to become a more effective facilitator of dialogue between legislators, international institutions, and civil society.

International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL) - $10,000

Support for ICNL in the implementation phase of the "Database, Journal, and Support for International Grant Making" project. A unique collection of laws, regulations, country reports, self-regulation codes of conduct, fiduciary and accounting standards, and other pertinent information on the legal environment within which NGOs operate in countries around the world, the ICNL database is intended as a resource for grantmakers, NGOs, law firms, etc. in an attempt to demystify and facilitate the process of cross-border philanthropy.

Affinity Group on Population, Reproductive Health and Rights - $10,000

Core support / member dues for activites of donor affinity group.

The Biodiversity Project (TBP) - $45,000

Core support for the Project to continue in its role as a nexus and catalyst for collaboration on biodiversity outreach strategies; to develop and disseminate strategies and practices for communication and public education; and to strengthen the outreach capacity of groups and institutions who communicate with the public on biodiversity.

Consultative Group on Biological Diversity (CGBD) - $10,000

Core support / member dues for activities of donor affinity group.

Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW) - $70,000

Year 1 of two years of core support to ELAW as they assist public interest lawyers and scientists around the world in gaining the skills and resources they need to protect the environment through law. ELAW serves as the Secretariat of a global alliance of grassroots environmental lawyers, helping them build a sustainable future through providing access to legal and scientific tools; strengthening existing organizations; hosting visiting fellows; reaching out to advocates; and building networks.

Interaction - $100,000

Core support for the nation's largest coalition of international development, disaster relief and refugee assistance agencies.

New America Foundation - $100,000

Core support for New America Foundation, a non-profit public policy institute whose purpose is to bring new voices and new ideas to the fore of America's public discourse. Believing that neither side of the political divide is adequately addressing the genuine challenges and opportunities of the era, the New America Foundation seeks to reshape the public debate by investing in individuals and ideas that transcend the conventional political spectrum.

Tides Center / Environmental Media Services (EMS) - $100,000

Year 1 of two years of core support for EMS to help expand media coverage of critical environmental and public health issues. EMS builds relationships with top scientists, physicians, and other experts to bring journalists the latest and most credible information on international and domestic issues ranging from forests to trade to biotechnology. EMS partners with non-profts working to improve public understanding of these issues.

Population Action International (PAI) - $10,000

Support for a retreat of international family planning advocates.
