Media

The Fund recognizes the central role of free expression and equal access to accurate information and forums for open debate in advancing democracy. Grants in this program support media reform efforts that maintain public access to the airwaves and the new digital spectrum, and that hold news outlets accountable for their reporting. The Fund also supports a range of independent media producers and distributors working in print, television, radio, and on the Internet.

Center for Independent Media - $25,000
A grant for this start-up media training and support organization that works with political bloggers in swing states.

Center for Economic Research and Social Change - $50,000
General support for two independent media projects: a progressive book publisher and distributor and a bimonthly magazine of political commentary and review.

Democracy Now! - $200,000
General support for one of the fastest growing independent radio and television news programs in the country.

Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting - $75,000 
Continued general support for FAIR’s work monitoring and analyzing mainstream news media.

Free Press - $100,000
General support for Free Press, which works at the national and local level to improve the diversity and independence of media.

Homelands Productions - $10,000
General support for this group of award-winning independent radio producers whose long-form radio portraits are featured on National Public Radio stations across the country.

Independent Media Institute/Alternet - $50,000
Ongoing general support for Alternet.org, a central site aggregating news, commentary, video, and audio and covering a wide range of topics and formats, from environmental reporting to political blogging and feminist columnists.

Institute for Public Accuracy - $50,000 
General support for their work gaining wide media access for a range of progressive researchers, activists, and analysts.

Link Media Inc./Link TV - $120,000 
Ongoing support for this cable and satellite television station that provides programming on critical global issues.

Media Access Project - $50,000
Continued general support for this public interest law firm’s support for the media reform movement.

People’s Production House - $70,000
A general support grant for this new, New York City-based youth media training, policy reform, and radio production organization.
