To promote its public policy goals, the Fund promotes public forums that offer accurate information and open debate.
1. Increase the independence and integrity of mainstream media.
Free Press –$100,000/year for up to 2 years
Core support, to improve the diversity and independence of the media.
2. Empower and build independent, public or alternative media.
Democracy Now! - $200,000
Core support for independent, progressive, daily international and national news programming.
Democracy Now! - $70,000
To work with local community-based groups to increase the number of stations that carry Democracy Now!
Independent Media Institute – $50,000
For Alternet.org’s “Alternative Election Coverage in 2004.”
Institute for Social And Cultural Change - $75,000
Core support for South End Press, an independent, alternative company publishing books on key political, cultural, social, economic, and ecological issues.
Link Media, Inc. – $50,000
Core support for LinkTV, providing a global perspective on news, current events and diverse cultures and present issues neglected in the U.S. media.
3. Support independent watchdog initiatives to expose bias, inaccuracy or incompleteness in the news.
Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) - $100,000
For monitoring and analysis of mainstream news media.
4. Oppose the aggregation of corporate control over media markets.
Media Access Project - $50,000
For litigation regarding media concentration and public access to emerging technologies.
5. Provide the nation’s leaders with truthful and unbiased information about policy options and their consequences for real people, their communities, and the natural world.
