Female Genital Mutilation Eradication

The practice of FGM has profound implications for women’s reproductive health and equity in Africa, as noted by the International Conference on Population and Development’s Cairo Plan of Action. This is the only program area of the Fund not focused on sustainable development. The Fund has, for historical reasons, made limited funds available for the support of highly leveraged initiatives to eradicate the practice of female genital mutilation.

Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH) - $9,950

Support for PATH’s participation in the UNFPA-sponsored FGM national planning meeting in Mali. The Ministry of Health and Ministry for Women and Children, along with UNFPA, are developing a national action plan for the eradication of FGM.

Research, Action, and Information Network for the Bodily Integrity of Women (RAINBO) - $75,000 (second year of two-year grant)

Core support for RAINBO’s work on eliminating female genital mutilation (FGM). RAINBO seeks to promote and protect women’s reproductive and sexual health and rights as part of their human rights. Starting with the issue of female circumcision/female genital mutilation, RAINBO has evolved into a specialized and highly flexible organization dedicated to fostering existing technical capacity of individuals and groups within Africa.

Women’s International Network (WIN) - $17,000

Core support for WIN, an organization which has promoted networking among women’s groups around the world for the past 25 years. WIN has been a leader in the international effort to eradicate the harmful traditional practice of FGM. Their Childbirth Picture Book has been distributed free of charge around the world, to teach women about reproductive health and the physical damage caused by FGM.
